Meanwhile, the ‘second’ largest diamond was discovered in Karowe mine, Botswana. According to Lucara Diamond Corporation.
This is based on the article from CNN. Based on the article,
Lucara Diamond Corporation stated that the newly discovered 2nd largest diamond is a “near-gem of variable quality.”
This means that the physical size of the diamond isn’t the main factor that defines its value.
According to Paul Zimnisky, a diamond analyst from New York, natural diamonds are usually classified under three categories.
“Gem-quality”, “near-gem” or “industrial-quality.”
He explained the purpose and application of the stones according to their qualities in his statement:
“Most gem-quality is used as jewelry, industrial-quality is typically used for abrasive application. Near-gem can be used as lower-end jewelry or for individual purposes.”
In the current case of the newly found stone, it is considerably a near-gem with bits of gem-quality. Paul Zimnisky explained that the true value of the diamond can only be realized when its entire quality is determined.
There are also other factors that determine the diamonds’ value. Such as: clarity, color and the way it can be portioned.
So the tennis-ball sized newly discovered diamond may not be as valuable as you think.
That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
