UP Civil Engineering Students Win International Eco-Friendly Cement Competition
UP STUDENTS – Four Civil engineering students from UP won the international eco-concrete competition.
“Our Mother Earth is a Home for all Beings,” as they said. A lot of organizations took the initiative to fight and prevent the destruction of the planet.
These people have been trying for years on how to save and protect the rainforests, animals, and environment from the misuse of the human force
Aside from them, studentsfrom all over the world were also trying to help. In schools, they spare their ideas on the cause.
Based on a report from Philstar, a group of students from the University of the Philippines who are taking up Civil Engineering recently won an international eco-concrete competition.
The said competition was hosted by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and was held in Canada.
According to the report, the UP students who won the first price are Angelica Anne Munar, Ryan Christopher Ramelo, Alexis Declaro and Paulo Santos.
The students used recycled materials like fly ash, porous rock, and waste class that’s mixed with pozzolanic tuff instead of gravel and cement.
“Rapid global urbanization boosts the demand for concrete at an unprecedented rate. This means that the environmental footprint of concrete production can no longer be ignored.”
Based on the report, the invention of the students was judged using 5 parameters. The ozone depletion, global warming, ecotoxicity, carcinogenic impact, and fossil fuel depletion.
“Teams thus have the mission to develop an innovative concrete mixture, which will have the lowest possible environmental impact while maintaining optimal mechanical and durability performances”
The Filipino students bagged the $750 prize. second and third prizes were won by students from Ecuador and Poland.
