Duterte’s message for People Power Anniversary

President Rodrigo Duterte gave his message for the 33rd People Power Anniversary, however, he skipped the rites for the third time.

The Chief Executive of the Philippines said that Filipinos should remember the essence of the historical event in EDSA as they will vote this coming 2019 Midterm Elections.

“As the entire nation prepares for the upcoming Midterm Elections this May, let us always remember how this historic revolution restored our power to collectively chart our future through the ballot,” the President said.

He is also looking forward that the celebration of People Power Anniversary will give inspiration to everyone, especially the youth of this generation.

Let us never forget the sacrifice of those who came before us so that we may always be motivated to preserve and protect the democratic way of life that we enjoy,” Duterte added, based on Inquirer’s report.

The President was not able to attend the last two commemoration of the People Power. Now, he skipped the event for the third time since he assumed the presidency back in June 2016.

However, he is set to attend the 1st National Assembly of the Liga ng Mga Barangay sa Pilipinas at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on February 25, 5:00 PM.

Education Undersecretary Lorna Dig-Dino led the wreath-laying ceremony at the People Power Monument along Edsa in Quezon City, in place of the President.

Based on a separate report from Inquirer, this is the statement of Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo regarding the absence of the President during the commemoration:

“While the President has to attend to more pressing matters of the State and may not be physically present during the commemoration of the People Power Revolution, he will however be there in union with the celebrators as well as in recognition and reminder to all that our government is a fruit of democracy and our sovereignty resides in the people and all authority emanates from them.”

He also explained that Duterte “has been working tirelessly, including on weekends.”
