The streaming giant’s Roma is a Spanish-language film directed by Alfonso Cuaron.

According to Inquirer’s report, it is “his deep personal exhumation of his Mexico City childhood”.

Cuaron was also nominated for direction, cinematography, and original screenplay. This is aside from the best picture.

“Cinema needs the opportunity to be diverse. What mainstream cinema and the theatrical experience has lacked in general is diversity. And I’m talking about diversity in terms of stories and characters and ways of doing films,” Cuaron said.

However, some of the academy members resist to give Netflix’s movies any nomination for Oscars 2019.

Prominent director Steven Speilberg once said that Netflix’s films should be given an Emmy and not Oscar for they are more like TV movies.

Meanwhile, Marvel’s Black Panther is the first superhero film nominated in the Best Picture category.

“To break down a wall like that, to be your ancestors’ wildest dreams, to show other young women of color and boys and girls that you can do whatever you want no matter what struggles you have in your life — all of that. That’s what it means to me,” Black Panther’s production designer Hannah Beachler.
