MALAYSIAN – Recently, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) recently arrested a Malaysian carrying a fake Filipino passport at NAIA on January 11.

According to Manila Bulletin, a report by BI port operations chief Grifton Medina to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente says that Medina identified the fake Filipino passenger as 36-year-old Toong Yuen Chin, who was then caught at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Chin, a Malaysian national, attempted to leave the country via an Air Asia flight to Kuala Lumpur. Chin used a fake Philippine passport under the assumed name of Jacky Cruz Chin, according to Medina.

Furthermore, Medina became suspicious of Chin when he declared his passport could not be encoded by the passport reader. Medina said that Chin confessed his true nationality as a Malaysian during the second inspection and admitted that a fixer named Lawrence facilitated his acquisition of a fraudulent Philippine passport for a fee.

As per the report, Chin will be detained in compliance with Commissioner Morente’s directive that all alien travelers caught using false documents be prosecuted for violating Philippine immigration laws.

The alien is currently confined at the BI Detention Center, Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City.

Glen Comia, a Senior immigration officer who heads the BI travel control and enforcement unit at NAIA 3,  said that the records showed that Chin arrived in the country on July 12 last year using his Malaysian passport. Comia further added that the reason why he used a fake passport is so that he can evade payment of immigration fees and fines for overstaying in the country.

Chin brought a Philhealth ID and a municipal birth certificate purportedly showing he was born in Sta. Ana, Manila to Filipino parents. However, examiners found out that the biographical page of the passenger’s Philippine passport is counterfeit, which is the main reason why it could not be read by passport scanner.
