CHARCOAL – The use of charcoal causes danger to public health and to Philippine’s economy said the global public health organization.

There are a lot of delicious Filipino dishes in the Philippines and most of them utilize charcoal in the means of cooking.

Based on a report from Inquirer, a family man in Makati named Fernando Pasion preferred using charcoal every day because it is more affordable than the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Passion stated that his supply of charcoal with just a price of P150.00 per sack could last for a week while the LPG cost up to P200.00.

In 2016, the World Health Organization reported the 84 deaths per 100,000 Pinoy due to indoor air pollution or cooking using coal.

Last 2013, the World Bank reported a total of 57,403 Filipino who died because of air pollution and these deaths caused the country to lost P123 billion.

The senior vice president of the Vital Strategies organization, Daniel Kass, said the people automatically accuses vehicles and industrial emissions when talking about air pollution. They didn’t know that carbon is as harmful when a human is exposed to it.

“Is it fair that people — by virtue of their poverty — suffer lung disease, cancer and early death just because they are poor? The answer is No,” he said.

Based on the report, the World Bank is currently promoting the use of LPG over charcoal and they suggested the government to help them with the transition.

Kass said you could save money for using charcoal but the cost is higher when you pay for health care and life became shorter.

He felt sorry for the people who died each year while the government still doesn’t have a solution to the problem.
