Meet the Father of Maute Group Leaders, an Engineer-Turned-Terror Suspect

Cayamora Maute, the father of Maute brothers who lead the siege in Marawi City, is a former engineer who is suspected to be funding the terror activities of the ISIS-backed group.

“Bilang patriarch, siya po ang namumuno ng pamilya at maaaring nagfi-finance ng ibang gawain nila,” Major Gen. Restituto Padilla, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said in an interview with DZMM.

“Iyung naipon po nilang kayamanan ay base sa kanyang pagiging enhinyero. Iyan din po ang pinagkuhanan ng pangsuporta niya sa 2 anak na ipinadala sa Gitnang Silangan, pinag-aral po sila,” he added.

Meanwhile, authorities are now investigating the possibility that the Maute Patriarch came up with their finances from illegal drugs.

Omar and Abdullah, sons of Cayamora Maute, are said to have led the terrorist group in attacking Marawi City last May 23, 2017. The attack prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in the entire Mindanao.

Based on the report of ABS-CBN News, Cayamora Maute was apprehended in Davao City on Tuesday, June 6, on board a vehicle along with his wife, daughter, son-in-law and their driver.

According to Padilla, Cayamora was scheduled to undergo medical check-up due to a still unknown illness by the time he was arrested. He and his family came from Cotabato City.

Padilla added that authorities were able to retrieve a gun, a homemade bomb, and P363,000 in cash from Cayamora and his group.

They are still under the custody of Davao police. They are waiting for a court order for a possible transfer to Manila.
