The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that a Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake hit Taxkorgan county in western China on Thursday, May 11, 2017, killed 8 people and 20 injured.
According to its latest earthquake bulletin, the 5.5 Magnitude earthquake which struck off a remote mountainous area in China’s Xinjiang region that borders Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan earlier was tectonic in origin and it hit at a depth of 10 kilometers.
According to USGS, Magnitude 5 earthquake can be “Felt by nearly everyone; many awakened. Some dishes, windows broken. Unstable objects overturned. Pendulum clocks may stop.”
In a statement released by Xinjiang Earthquake Administration, at least 23 people have been injured and over 180 houses had collapsed in the country.
Based on a report of Aljazeera, most homes in the region are made of wood and rock or mudbricks.
