Jose Jerry Belibestre From UNO-R Breaks 18-Year Boys Long Jump Record

Jose Jerry Belibestre, a young athlete from the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental broke the 18-year record of Joebert Delicano in boys long jump.

Belibestre claimed the gold after a record breaking 7.43 meters in the 2nd day of 2017 Ayala-National Open Invitational Athletics Championships at the Ilagan Sports Complex.

The young athlete who’s turning 19 next month broke the 7.41 record of Delicano, now a national team coach, who made a history 18 years ago in the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia. The latter was barely 18-year-old at the time.

Jose Jerry Belibestre, a third year Education student bested his other competitors including Jericho Hilario of San Beda College and Jhaelord Adriano of Isabela State University. The two marked 6.82m and 6.80m and took silver and bronze respectively.

On the other hand, Belibestre’s record would have finished fourth in men’s long jump following Sri Lanka’s Amila Jayasiri Wijayalath Pedige (7.83m, gold) and his countrymen Janry Ubas (7.52 , silver) and Julian Reem Fuentes.

The UNORian athlete who first trained inside the grounds of STI-West Negros University has yet to earn a place in the national competition because according to the report of Philstar.com, his handlers wanted him to stay back home although the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association or PATAFA recommended him to undergo training in Manila and secure a spot in the Philippine team.
