Duterte Not Satisfied With Rehabilitation For Yolanda Victims

The Philippine President is not contented on the pacing of providing shelter to the victims of Yolanda.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered his Cabinet members to try to expedite providing shelters to the victims of Yolanda.

Duterte on Tuesday visited the mass grave of Yolanda victims in Tacloban City, Leyte as the country commemorates the third anniversary of the disaster.

In his speech, Duterte criticized the rehabilitation efforts of the Philippine government for the survivors especially on providing shelters to those who became homeless.

The President asked why only a few houses have been built for the displaced thousands of residents after the calamity in the year 2013.

“Three years after, iilang tao pa lang nakatira sa bunkhouses? It’s BS to me. I am not satisfied. Three years, wala pay nakabalhin kaayo [only a few moved to a house],” Duterte said.

“Iyang houses na iyan, ‘pag hindi matapos susunod na buwan, gawan mo na lang ng crematorium,” the President added.

In October, the Department of Social Welfare and Development has asked the president to order an investigation into the alleged irregularities in the delivery of shelters to victims of Yolanda during the time of the previous administration.

Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo noted that the agency had found that some 200,000 claimants were not given emergency shelter either because there was no available relocation site or because they did not support certain local government officials.

A report of the findings has been submitted to Malacañang, Taguiwalo said.

Taguiwalo said the DSWD re(–foul word(s) removed–)sed the previous administration’s efforts in the aftermath of the supertyphoon especially in the Western Visayas and Eastern Visayas.

During his speech, Duterte then apologized to the survivors for the delay of the rehabilitation.

“Ako po ay nanghihingi ng tawad sa inyo,” he said.

He tasked presidential assistant for Visayas Michael Diño and Vice President Leni Robredo to have a speedy implementation og the housing projects.

“In the fullness of God’s time, I’ll be back December. By December, gusto ko makalipat na silang lahat,” the President said.
