Cannes award-winning director Brillante Mendoza explained the reasons behind “Indie” style of broadcasting the first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, July 25, 2016.
Brillante Mendoza said in an interview with ABS-CBN News‘ Ginger Conejero that he understands if some did not like how the presidential report was shot.
On the other hand, he was glad of the positive feedback from film literates with regard to how the camera angle went through during the airing of SONA.
“For those who don’t understand those kinds of shots, it was really the intention to make it different from the past SONA,” he said.
He noted that SONA was shot in that way so that viewers will not get bored upon watching the speech.
“I call that a power shot. When you articulate something and you shoot that person in that angle, psychologically it gives you that meaning that he has power and authority,” he said citing an angle of Duterte which was labelled by some netizens as “shooting up” angle.
The internationally acclaimed filmmaker who recently won big over his movie entry, “Ma’ Rosa” said that he earlier wanted to dim the lighting to make it dramatic and let the president be the “center of attention.”
