Rep. Belmonte: No Impeachment Against President Rody Duterte

The outgoing House Speaker Sonny Belmonte denied the allegations that there’s an impending impeachment case against the newly-elected Pres. Duterte. He is hopeful instead that the Davao City Mayor and incoming Vice President Leni Robredo will work together for the good of the Philippines.

The rumors about impeachment of the President started when some netizens posted their fears on social media for the possibility of the alleged Plan B against the Duterte administration.

Rep. Belmonte denied the impeachment rumors and stated that “I don’t know where the word impeachment comes ha pero let’s face it, the chances of that is zero and nobody will even think of it. Let’s give the new president the chance to run the country without talk about impeachment or anything like that being uttered by anybody of any political party, zero. I myself have been part of a number of impeachments – kay Erap, kay Corona and the aborted one of Gutierrez – and definitely I don’t see any reason whatsoever for the president to fear this if he does or to include it in his thinking,” he said.

The Quezon City Congressman Rep. Belmonte led the impeachment against the former President Joseph Estrada, Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez and Chief Justice Renato Corona at the Lower House.

Rep. Belmonte’s statement came after the President-elect dared his critics to impeach him once he assumes his office as the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines.

The House Speaker also denied the allegations about the supposed “Plan B” which according to him is just a political intrigue. “Yan ang malaking intriga sinasabi ng mga tao and I know hindi mga peryodista nag-iisip noon,” he said.

According to Rep. Belmonte that government under President Duterte should not talk about the impeachment. He stated “Why should we be talking about that? We should be talking about confidence, about achieving and so forth. Hindi yung parang may takutan na dito. Hindi yung parang may negativism…We’re doing ourselves a big disservice as a people by doing that thing.”
