The head of the incoming ruling political party PDP-Laban, Sen. Koko Pimentel revealed during an interview with the media that he plans to meet with Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano soon in the hope that the senator who also plans to run for Senate President would join the “supermajority” in the Philippine Senate after the Liberal Party promised to support Sen. Pimentel.
According to the camp of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, the running-mate of President Rody Duterte, there are four senators who are supporting him but when Sen. Pimentel can convince the senator from Taguig, his “supermajority” number in the Senate would raise to 22 senators.
Sen. Koko Pimentel is confident that he could end up with the supermajority in the senate after the Liberal and NPC parties who may end up supporting his leadership come July 25 when the 17th Congress opens its session. Out of the 24 senators, only Sen. Francis Escudero and Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV had decided to join the minority bloc.
The other potential senate president who aims for the said position is no other than Sen. Tito Sotto but later on he dropped his plans and instead agreed to become the Majority Floor Leader. Sen. Pimentel also said that he wanted the Senate to have a minority bloc as it was needed in a “democracy” so it could do its job of checking the majority.
According to Sen. Tito Sotto, the agreement to field Sen. Koko Pimentel as Senate President was due to the fact that the senator from Mindanao belonged to the political party of President-elect Rody Duterte.
