Ex-Chief Justice Renato Corona Dies at 67 Due to Cardiac Arrest

The former head of the judiciary branch of the government, Ex-Chief Justice Renato Corona passed away on Friday morning at the age of 67 due to cardiac arrest. The confirmation of CJ Corona’s death was released to the media by the family of the former chief justice as they also informed the Supreme Court of his death.

The National Transformation Council announced to the media that Chief Justice Renato Corona died at 1:48 A.M. on Friday morning. The council also posted on their official Facebook Page the following announcement:

“It is with deep sorrow that the National Transformation Council announce the demise of Council member Chief Justice Renato C. Corona. At 1:48 am today, April 29, 2016, Chief Justice Corona succumbed to cardiac arrest. Please pray for the eternal repose of his soul as he joins his Creator,” the council said in its Facebook post.

Due to the death of Chief Justice Corona Supreme Chief Court Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno ordered that the flag in Supreme Court and all courts nationwide be raised at half mast to mourn the passing one of the country’s most brilliant lawyer and judge.

Chief Justice Renato Corona was the controversial Chief Justice who was removed from office in May 2012 through impeachment votes of senators due to betrayal of public trust and for violating the Constitution when he failed to declare several of his assets and properties in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN).

Before serving as the head of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Chief Justice Corona was appointed as an associate justice by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in April 2002. He was appointed as the 23rd SC’s chief justice in May 2010.

The late chief justice Renato Corona was a former law professor, private law practitioner, and member of the Cabinet under two Presidents, Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, before being appointed to the high tribunal, or the Supreme Court of the Philippines.
