Commissioner Guanzon to Push Code of Conduct of Candidates

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon wants to push the code of conduct for all candidates after the controversial remarks of Mayor Duterte regarding an incident in Davao City that became the hottest topic on various news media in the Philippines. The Commissioner also criticized the Davao City Mayor and presidential candidate about the incident involving an Australian missionary.

In an official statement released to the media, the Comelec Commissioner stated that out of 54.3 million Filipino voters, “there are 27,896,668 women voters.” She pointed out that this is “1.7 million more women voters than men.” The sensationalized joke of Mayor Duterte became the main weapons not only by his opponents but also the national media who keeps on reporting the negative sides of Mayor Duterte’s campaign.

Mayor Duterte faced public outrage from netizens according to various news report but his political sorties in various parts of the Visayas shows otherwise. Contrary to the news report seen on national TV’s, the Duterte rallies in Bacolod City and Iloilo City were all jampacked with tens of thousands of his volunteer supporters coming out to cheer for the mayor and future President of the Philippines.

Meanwhile according to Commissioner Guanzon, the statement of Mayor Duterte during his rally is one of the reason why she will propose a Code of Conduct for Candidates. She was quoted as saying “As chair of the gender and development committee of the Commission on Elections, I will propose a Code of Conduct for Candidates, and will reform election rules to emphasize gender sensitivity and gender equality,” she said.

The Comelec commissioner belongs to the Comelec First Division, the same division that handled Mayor Duterte’s cases to stop the mayor from running for president.

During the deliberation of Mayor Duterte’s case in the Comelec First Division, the mayor moved to inhibit Guanzon from hearing the cases against him, as he cited the commissioner’s supposedly “palpable bias,” but the Comelec denied the mayor’s claim and continue the hearing against Duterte.

The commissioner belongs to the division that voted to allow Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to run for President of the Republic of the Philippines.
