The United States confirmed their intentions to join the Philippines in patrolling the hotly-contested areas in Southeast Asia during an interview with no less than the US Ambassador to the Philippines.

According to US Ambassador Philip Goldberg there are no limitations to what that US can do. He was quoted as saying “I don’t think there are limitations to what the US can do. I could say yes,” Goldberg said in a press conference.

The statement of the US Ambassador was released to the media when asked about the Philippine suggestion to have joint patrols with the superpower in the disputed area.

During an earlier reports, the Philippine government raised the possibility of joint patrols in the West Philippine Sea by the Philippine Navy and the US Navy, after the Supreme Court of the Philippines upheld the constitutionality of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between the two countries.

Ambassador Goldberg did not categorically say that there would be joint patrols between the Philippines and the United States in the disputed waters, he also maintained that EDCA is not meant to solve maritime disputes in the region.

The US ambassador to the Philippines reiterated further that the US will continue to follow international law and exercises freedom of navigation in the West Philippine Sea or the South China Sea which is considered as hotly contested waters in the Asian region.

US Ambassador Goldberg stated that “I’m not going to announce anything about joint patrols. I’m going to say we will continue to exercise freedom of navigation, operations. I don’t want to prejudge how we will carry out the defense relationship. But we have a deep interest in assuring freedom of navigation in those waters,” Goldberg said.
