Ateneo Blue Eagles Wins First-Ever UAAP Men’s Volleyball Title Against NU

The Ateneo Blue Eagles Men’s Volleyball team, defeated the National University (NU) Bulldogs in four sets to win the title of the UAAP Men’s Volleyball championship with the final score at 25-23, 25-23 and 25-15 to dethrone the defending champions. Ateneo’s victory in the men’s volleyball is the school’s first-ever title since joining the league in 1978.

Although the Blue Eagles dropped the first set 23-25, the fought back in the next three sets scoring 25-23, 25-23 and 25-15 and captured the men’s championship of the UAAP Season 77 Volleyball competition.

Ateneo’s Rex Intal scored a running spike to hand the Blue Eagles championship title as his team completed a stunning sweep of the best-of-three title series. The Katipunan-based volleyball squad last won a championship in 1976 in the NCAA under coach Pitong Custodio.

Marck Espejo, this year’s UAAP Men’s Volleyball MVP scored 33 points for the Ateneo Blue Eagles, he was also instrumental in the Game 1 victory of Ateneo against the three-peat seeking NU Bulldogs. Espejo fired a personal season-high 31 hits giving the Blue Eagles the upper hand in the finals.

The Finals MVP was awarded to Ish Polvorosa who averaged 46.5 excellent sets in the title series between the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the NU Bulldogs Mens’ Volleyball competition.
