Hollywood movie “American Sniper” dominated the U.S. and Canadian box offices in terms on earnings over the weekend, selling a whoppoing $64.4 million in tickets as revealed by studio estimates. The Oscar-nominated war film directed by Clint Eastwood and featured Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper has taken in more than $200 million in the United States and Canadian theaters since its opening last January 16, 2015.
Oscar nominee Holly star Bradley Cooper portrays the role of a Navy Seal sharpshooter and produced by Warner Bros., the Time Warner Inc unit that released the film even called the hit movie as “cultural phenomenon” after it smashed records for a drama film opening.
The movie “American Sniper” is now on its second week of wide release and scored the third-biggest January weekend in U.S. box office history, according to the records by tracking firm Rentrak, it is now playing in 3,755 theaters.
Meanwhile aside from the box office success of the “American Sniper,” another movie is also showing a remarkable earnings in the box office. The Jennifer Lopez movie thriller “The Boy Next Door” currently finished second place on its opening weekend with $15 million from Friday through Sunday.
The movie “The Boy Next Door” features Jennifer Lopez portraying the role of a teacher who engages in a reckless liaison with a teen-aged neighbor, outperformed expectations for an opening of around $12 million to $13 million. The movie has a production cost of just $4 million but the box office income already exceeds in the early days of showing.
Aside from the Jennifer Lopez movie, the family film “Paddington,” based on the series of classic children’s books about a loveable bear seeking a new home, came in third place in terms of box office earnings with $5.5 million and $4.1 million.
