The defeat of the Philippines in the Men’s basketball competition of the 2014 Asian Games relegated the national team to the battle for seventh place, while the once mighty China, can still salvage a Fifth Place finish.
The Filipinos could not muster enough enough power to complete their fourth quarter surge and fall to the more determined Chinese squad, who suffered an exit in the Final Four after they were defeated by Japan and Iran in the quarterfinals.
During the game against China, the Gilas opponent, controlled most quarters, with the Filipinos trailing by as much as 19 points, 60-41, midway in the third quarter.
The Gilas Pilipinas squad tried to fought back in the fourth quarter through the leadership of naturalized center Marcus Douthit, the top-scorer for the Philippines with 24 points. The Filipinos came close with just four points at 70-66, during the few minutes of the fourth quarter but they failed to score a win against China.
The Philippines will wrap up its Asian Games campaign this coming Wednesday with the seventh-place game on Wednesday.
