U2 Released Their First Album in Five Years for Free on Apple’s iTunes Surprise

International superstar and Irish band U2 released their first album after more than five years, this time it’s for free on Apple’s iTunes in a surprise during the tech giant’s announcement of its latest smartphones. The highly anticipated launch event was held near San Francisco, California.

The band U2 also played a single from their new album, “Songs of Innocence,” which Apple announced it had sent out at no cost to half a billion iTunes customers around the world.

The leader and CEO of the world-renowned company, Apple’s Tim Cook, joined frontman Bono on stage for a playful countdown to the unexpected announcement which was described as “the largest album release of all time.”

During the album launch of U2, their front man and lead vocalist, Bono, described the album, as the band’s first since the release of their 2009 chart-topping album “No Line on the Horizon.” The latest album of U2 according to Bono, is deeply personal and the said release served as “instant gratification.”

U2 vocalist Bono was quoted as saying “From the very beginning, U2 have always wanted our music to reach as many people as possible, the clue is in our name I suppose — so today is kind of mind-blowing to us,” Bono said.

The Cupertino-based company Apple, also released and revealed their latest products, its first smartwatch, as well as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus during the event. They also announced that it would provide the album for free to customers who set up iTune accounts in the next five weeks.

Aside from Apple’s announcement of their latest products, U2 will also release a physical copy, featuring acoustic versions, with four additional tracks and a liner booklet, which will be released on October 13, 2014.
