MMDA to Give Free Rides to Stranded Commuters on Thursday (June 19)

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will give free rides to the commuters  who will be affected by transport strike on Thursday June 19, 2014.

“We are ready to provide additional vehicles for ‘Libreng Sakay’ to serve the commuters,” MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino told the Manila Bulletin.

They prepared trucks and buses to accommodate the passengers who will be stranded on the day of the transport strike. Francis Tolentino suggest also to use the Pasig Ferry as an alternative.

The authorities are expecting that thousands of Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) drivers will participate in the protest to oppose in the new order that implements higher fines for the operators and colorums who will commit violations.

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (TFRB) has issued the new administrative order No. 2014-01.

Under the order, the buses will be fined up to P1 million, P200, 000 for the vans and trucks, P120, 000 for sedans, P150,000 for jeepneys and P6,ooo for the motorcycles.
