The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) already approved the applications of a total of 171 institutions nationwide for tuition fee increase according to details released by the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP).

The pending tuition increase applications from Cagayan Region, Central Luzon, and some parts of Metro Manila were excluded in the lists of higher institutions seeking tuition fee increase.

The student group NUSP denounced CHED Chairperson Dr. Patricia Licuanan for the approval of tuition increase, as well as for the statement justifying the increases that only 8% of college students were truly poor.

According to CHED’s own data there are two out of five college freshmen drop out after the first year of enrollment but the data contradicts the UNESCO study that shows 73% of Filipino youth drop out due to the high cost of education.

The Student Group NUSP also criticized CHED’s immediate solution of providing poor college student with scholarship grants and students which the group considered as “Band-Aid, morsels, or alms” that do not solve the root cause of the huge dropout rates in the country.
