The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck off Ilocos Norte on Monday, April 28, 2014. The tremor was recorded 169 kilometers northwest of Burgos town at exactly 8:43 a.m.
Phivolcs noted that were will be expected aftershocks on the 5.4 magnitude earthquake which has jolt the coast of Ilocos Norte. Intensity 2 was also felt in Laoag City.
The magnitude 5.4 earthquake was tectonic in origin which struck at a depth of 34 kilometers.
According to Phivolcs, Magnitude 5.4 earthquakes are “earthquakes with moderate strong and are felt over the wide areas; some of them cause small local damages near the epicenter.”
“Generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors. Many sleeping people are awakened. Some are frightened, some run outdoors. Strong shocking and rocking felt throughout building. Hanging objects swirling violently. Dining utensils clatter and clink; some are broken. Small, light and unstable objects may fall or overturn. Liquids spill from filled open containers. Standing vehicles rock noticeably. Shaking of leaves and twigs of trees are noticeable.”
Based upon the latest report, Phivolcs recorded a magnitude 3.2 tectonic earthquake which hit Santa Ana, Cagayan at exactly 10:22 a.m.
There are no immediate damage reported as of press time. We will continue to monitor any incident regarding the Ilocos Norte earthquake and we will post an update here.
The local government of Ilocos Norte has yet to release any statement regarding the 5.4 magnitude earthquake but Phivolcs advise the public earlier to be updated on the intensities and aftershocks produced by the earthquake.
