Chile Tsunami Warning Issued After 8.2 Magnitude Earthquake

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre had already issued a Tsunami Warning in Chile and its neighboring countries after the m(–foul word(s) removed–)ive 8.2 earthquake hit off the coast of Chile.

Update: Tsunami warning center drops Tsunami Warning for all countries, except for Chile and Peru; all other alerts canceled.

Tsunami Chile Alert

The Tsunami Warning Centre was quoted as saying “It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre and could also be a threat to more distant coasts,” the centre said, which is an indication that a tsunami had been generated.

The warning also noted that the 8.2 earthquake has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near epicentre within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours.

The Chilean Navy reported also that the first tsunami wave had hit the coast of within 45 minutes of the quake, however they were no further details of exactly where it had hit.

The USGS reported earlier that the 8.2-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 10km, 83km from Iquique on Chile’s coast.
