Ilocos Norte Hits by 5.3 Magnitude Earthquake (Intensity Reports)

The province of Ilocos Norte in Northern Philippines was hit by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake on Monday afternoon as confirmed by the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The Ilocos Norte earthquake struck with a depth of 29 kilometers at 29 kilometers south-west of Burgos Ilocos Norte at around 1:56 PM on February 17, 2014.

According to Phivolcs aftershocks are expected to rattle some parts of Ilocos Norte, the earthquake is said to be tectonic in origin as reported by Phivolcs.

Here’s the Intensity Report of the Ilocos Norte Earthquake:

  • Intensity V – Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte
  • Intensity IV – Sarrat, Laoag and Paoay, Ilocos Norte
  • Intensity III – Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Claveria, Cagayan; Bangui, Ilocos Norte
  • Intensity II – Santa, Ilocos Sur; Callao, Peñablanca and Calayan, Cagayan
  • Intensity I – Baguio City

The Local Government of Ilocos Norte and Phivolcs reported that there is no immediate damage from the earthquake.

Aside from the Ilocos Norte earthquake on Monday, another earthquake was also reported by Phivolcs on Sunday afternoon, the quake struck at 28 kilometers Northeast of Laoag city at 3.0 magnitude.

The earthquake struck at around 3:51 PM and was felt at Intensity III in Laoag City; Batac, Sarrat, Pasuguin and Paoay, Ilocos Norte.
