Truly a Classic One: Ginebra-San Mig Game 7, Breaks New Grounds

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and San Mig Coffee Manila Classico game seven set new heights as the classic semifinal battle last Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum eclipse all-time record in gate attendance and TV ratings.

The electrifying series-clinching game which seen the Mixers, dominating the crowd-favorite Kings with a 110-87 victory earned a whopping 24,883 gate receipts, shattering the previous all-time PBA crowd of high of 23,436 in last year’s game three finals match between Ginebra and Alaska.

The highly-anticipated game aired at TV 5 also recorded historic television ratings for a PBA game with 10.1 average minute rating (AMR) and 32.8 percent audience share in MEGATAM, according to overnight data from Nielsen Media research. It garnered 9.3 AMR and 31 percent audience share in National Urban TV Audience Measurement (NUTAM) data.

“The series was tightly fought between the two popular ballclubs. I’m amazed at how the fans love both teams and I’m also very happy with the outstanding viewership ratings the PBA semifinals brought to TV5,” said TV5 president and chief executive officer Noel Lorenzana. The game’s peak generated 5.4 million viewers, which is equivalent to 12.4 AMR and 48.4 percent audience share, three million less than the combined viewers of ABS-CBN and GMA-7 that time, making the fancied basketball duel the most watched in primetime that night.

The PBA Home DSL Philippine Cup resumes on Friday with the game one of the Finals between the Rain or Shine and San Mig tipping off at 8 p.m. live over TV5.
