Michael Martinez Short Program Video in Figure Skating

Michael Christian Martinez enters the finals or the Free Program event in Figure Skating after his successful run in the Short Program held yesterday night, scoring an impressive 64.81 points and secured a slot in the Top 24.

The 17-year-old figure skater Michael Martinez also made a historic record in the Winter Olympics as the first athlete from a tropical country particularly in Southeast Asia to compete in one of the most popular sporting event in the Winter Games.

The lone Philippine athlete in Sochi Winter Olympics ranked 19th overall among the Top 24 who qualified for the Figure Skating Free Program held at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi, Russia on Thursday night.

Michael Christian Martinez was the fifth to perform in a field of 29 other skaters from 21 nations worldwide, one of the most popular athlete in the competition, the two-time Olympic gold medalist Plushenko from Russia,  withdrew from the event due to injuries.

Leading the list of qualifiers into the Final 24 is the world No. 1 rank Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan who scored with 101.54 score a new world record in Figure skating event. The Japanese open up a 2.93-point lead on the three-time world champion and current world No. 2 Patrick Chan of Canada.
