PAGASA Issues Signal NO. 2 in VisMin for Bagyong Basyang (Kajiki)

The Tropical cyclone “Basyang” whose international name is Kajiki has intensified into a storm, threatening some areas in the Visayas and Mindanao (VisMin) as confirmed by PAGASA.

According to PAGASA as of 10:00 AM on Friday, January 31, 2013 “Basyang” was spotted 500 kilometers East Northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. The Bagyong Basyang gained strength, now packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 80 kph.

Basyang is forecast to move west at 30 kilometers per hour (kph). The tropical cyclone is expected to make a landfall somewhere between Southern Leyte and Northern tip of Surigao del Norte area between late Friday and early Saturday morning.

PAGASA reported that they have already hoisted Signal No. 2 for Bagyong Basyang, areas under Signal No. 2 could experience wind speed of 60 to 100 kph winds in at least 24 hours.

Storm Signal No. 1 is hoisted in the following areas: Masbate, Cuyo Island, Northern Samar, Biliran Island, Aklan, Capiz, Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Siquijor, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, the rest of Agusan del Norte, the rest of Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, northern part of Bukidnon, and Zamboanga del Norte.

In a press conference conducted today, PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio stated that the storm is likely to maintain its westward movement, as no high pressure area was seen to block its path. PAGASA stated further that the typhoon is unlikely to shift towards the northern part of the country due to the presence of the northeast monsoon (amihan).

The weather bureau advised residents who lived in the typhoon path especially those who are in low-lying and mountainous areas under Signal No. 2 & No. 1 should prepare for possible flash floods and landslides. Storm surges also warned of possible storm surges particularly those who were living in coastal areas.
