Gilmore Junio: Fil-Canadian Athlete for Sochi Winter Olympics 2014

The Winter Olympics 2014 will kick off this coming February 6, 2014 in Sochi, Russia which will feature the best and most prominent athletes in the world of sports particularly in the Winter games. Fil-Canadian Gilmore Junio will represent Canada in the 22nd Olympic Winter Games.

The Fil-Canadian Gilmore Junio qualified to be one of the speed skaters for Team Canada after he finished 2nd in the men’s 500-meter race and 3rd in the men’s 1,000 meter race category during the Canadian national competition.

The 23-year-old Gilmore Junio made a name in the speed skating world after he bagged the gold medal at the Speed Skating World Cup last November held at Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Filipino Canadian speed skater gained worldwide prominence when he won 2nd place in the World Cup Speed Skating in 2012 held in Nagano, Japan in the 500 meter men’s category. He also finished first in the team sprint demonstration race alongside teammates from Winnipeg and Regina. 

Gilmore Junio was born and raised in Calgary, Canada, his parents Gino and Julie, emigrated from the Philippines to Canada in the 1970s. Speed skater Gilmore Junio is dubbed as the “Fastest Filipino on Ice,” and got a sponsorship deal with the Philippines largest telecom network, PLDT.
