According to a report from Gizmodo, a few nights ago, residents around Ontario woke up to mysterious booms – like an explosion or a falling tree but it turns out that it was caused by the cold weather or the cold frost.

Canadians observed like a gl(–foul word(s) removed–) jar of water in the freezer, the ground can crack as liquid water expands while freezing into ice. According to the Canadian weather bureau, the Frost Quakes requires a sharp temperature drop.

The water must be warm enough to first saturate the ground and then suddenly cold enough for a quick freeze. The explosions in Canada are so loud because frost quakes happens so close to the surface.

Frost Quakes are already reported in the Midwestern portion of Canada and New England. In report by posted by OutsideOnline.com they describe “Frost Quake” as the same as “cryoseism,” it occurs when water penetrates the soil and then rapidly freezes, with temperatures in the area reaching minus four degrees Fahrenheit, the quakes are becoming more frequent.
