Bobby Murphy: Fil-Am Co-Founder of Snapchat Messaging App

Bobby Murphy is the Filipino-American co-founder of the hottest messaging app nowadays, Snapchat. The messaging app, Snapchat is currently making headlines in the United States as it was revealed by Forbes that they turned down a $3-billion offer from Facebook.

The 25-year-old Fil-Am Bobby Murphy and the 23-year-old Evan Spiegel are the two young men behind Snapchat. The messaging app built by Bobby Murphy and Evan Spiegel was released in 2011. The Snapchat founders is featured in Forbes Magazines’ 30 Under 30 List of 2014.

Snapchat’s main features is to allow people to send smartphone photos and videos, which will disappear in 10 seconds or less after being opened. Based upon the estimates made by Forbes, there are currently 50 million people using Snapchat, with an average age of 18 years old.

The Fil-Am co-founder of Snapchat, Bobby Murphy was born with a Filipino mother. Bobby Murphy met his co-founder Evan Spiegel when they were student at the Stanford University in California. He was a mathematics and computational science major, while Spiegel was in the product-design program.

According to Snapchat’s founders interview with Forbes, Murphy and Spiegel first worked together to develop an online software called Future Freshmen, but it didn’t take off.

Bobby Murphy and Evan Spiegel came up with the suggestion for an app to send disappearing photos, they tap Reggie Brown (who would later sue the company for ownership) to develop the app.

Although Snapchat’s co-founder Evan Spiegel is considered as the public face of Snapchat, Bobby Murphy, the chief technology officer (CTO) is the brains who developed the app. Murphy is a son of a state employees from Berkeley and his mother had emigrated from the Philippines. 

In a separate report from Business Insider, Bobby Murphy bought a $2.1 million, two-bedroom house in Venice, California. The property is a 2,250-square-foot house located at 43 Brookes Ave., it is designed by architech Larry Scarpa and artist Randy West.
