UP Manila Suspends Classes on January 9 for Black Nazarene Feast

The University of the Philippines Manila Campus announced that the January 9, 2014 classes are suspended at all levels in anticipation of the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila.

The Office of the Chancellor of the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila announced the suspension through UP Manila’s Memorandum No. CMBA 2014-001. According to UP the suspension is in anticipation of the heavy traffic that will caused by the annual Feast of the Black Nazarene procession.

The classes at all levels in UP Manila and the office operations of the University is suspended on Thursday, January 9, 2014. Although UP-Manila Campus operation is suspended the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) which is under the University of the Philippines is business as usual, PGH is not included in the memorandum order.

Other Metro Manila schools and universities have not yet issued their respective class suspension notice, as of posting time. The Feast of the Black Nazarene is expected to to draw millions of devotees to Quiapo who anticipates the annual celebration.

The Manila City Government and the MMDA have already prepared measures to secure the areas covered by the procession of the Black Nazarene and those areas where most of the devotees converged.
