Snow blanketing in some areas of Cairo, Egypt turned the desert land into a beach of white snow coating northern part of the region on Friday.
Fierce winter snowstorm hit areas in Middle East; covering suburbs of Cairo, Jerusalem and Syria with layer of snow and it would be the Egypt’s capital’s first snowfall after 112 years.
In Syria, the clash between combatant armies and rebels paused as thick layer of snow covered their battlegrounds and temperature dropped around zero. Meanwhile, Jerusalem flights were cancelled due to bad weather condition and three emergency centers were set up with 350 residents already treated due to cold-relating cases.
According to local officials, a regional cold spread to Egypt on Friday with decreasing temperature. “It is the first time in very many years” that it has snowed in the suburbs of Cairo, Ali Abdelazim said, a meteorological centre official.
Many Cairo citizens were shocked on this rare happening in which their houses,backyard, streets and establishments were covered with layers of snow.
The authorities decided to continue the closure of the ports in Mediterranean cities due to bad weather conditions.
Children in far-flung districts gambol in white-covered streets while adults marveled at the sight and taking pictures.
