The UP President Alfredo Pascual has instructed all chancellors of UP Diliman, UP Manila, UP Baguio, UP Los Baños, UP Mindanao, and UP Visayas in Iloilo, including the dean of UP Cebu, to accommodate all affected students from UP Visayas Tacloban College (UPVTC) campus and UP Manila School of Health Sciences (UPM-SHS) in Palo, Leyte who would want to cross-register for the second semester.
The move by the University of the Philippines is in response to the onslaught of super typhoon Yolanda that hits the central Visayas last November 8, 2013.
The UP Visayas Tacloban College (UPVTC) campus and UP Manila School of Health Sciences (UPM-SHS) in Palo Leyte were two of the most affected schools of the University of the Philippines. UPVTC has 1,543 students, faculty, and staffers while UPM-SHS had 209 with no reported fatalities.
The UP Los Baños has already offered dormitory accommodation and living allowance to at least 100 of those who will cross-register from the typhoon-stricken campuses in the Visayas.
UP Diliman is rebracketing its students from Samar, Leyte and Cebu and other areas affected by the typhoon under the Socialized Tuition and Financial (–foul word(s) removed–)istance Program (STFAP) to Bracket E2, which means they get full tuition discount and receive a stipend of P10,000 every semester.
Most students from these areas are from Brackets C, D and E, which means that they come from poor families, according to data from the Office of Scholarships and Student Services, which initially identified 1,154 students eligible for bracketing.
