USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier to Join Relief Efforts in Typhoon Yolanda

The Philippines closest ally, the United States announced that it is sending an aircraft carrier an $20 million in emergency humanitarian aid to the storm-ravaged country which was hit by super typhoon Yolanda.

According to the US Officials, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier “U.S.S. George Washington” was ordered to depart Hong Kong, where it had been visiting, and join the international relief efforts intended for the devastated Visayas region.

The aircraft carrier will be carrying more than 5,000 sailors and 80 aircraft, they will be accompanied by five other U.S. ships to provide humanitarian (–foul word(s) removed–)istance, supplies, and medical care. The Pentagon announced that the USS George Washington was expected to arrive in the disaster zone in 48 to 72 hours.

Aside from the U.S. Navy sending one of its largest carrier, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Prime Minister David Cameron was also sending a Royal Navy warship and will donates some $16 million worth of aid to the typhoon victims.

The US and UK are just two of dozens of countries and organizations that have pledged tens of millions of dollars in aid since the typhoon devastated the Southeast Asian nation on November 8, 2013. The United Nations has estimated that about 660,000 Filipinos were displaced by the typhoon.

The national government officials have estimated that a total of around 9.8 million Filipinos in 41 provinces have been affected by the super typhoon Yolanda, one of the world’s worst typhoon.
