The national poll body, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) First Division disqualified Laguna Governor ER Ejercito for overspending during the May 2013 Elections as announced by COMELEC on Thursday, September 26, 2013.
The long-time governor of Laguna ran under the opposition party, the United Nationalist Alliance, defeated the administration’s bet, Edgar San Luis of the Liberal Party during the May 2013 Laguna gubernatorial race.
The Liberal Party candidate Edgar San Luis got the backing and machinery of the administration, even getting personal endorsement from no less than President Aquino, himself, but he still lost during the election.
According to Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr., the poll body “resolved to disqualify the incumbent governor for campaign overspending.” Gov. Ejercito may still file for a Motion for Reconsideration within the next five days.
The Comelec records shows that Gov. Ejercito spent P6 million in television advertisement alone when he was only allowed to spend P4.5 million for the 1,525,522 registered voters in the Province of Laguna.
