The COMELEC (Commission on Elections) decided that there will be no more extension of the voter registration for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections. The deadline of registration ends at around 5:00 PM, July 31, 2013.
For the past few days various groups appealed to the COMELEC to extend the deadline for registration, as more voters went to COMELEC offices to register either as first-time voters or transferees.
According to the poll body, the entire registration process should be completed by August 31, or 120 days before the election day, as provided by law. The schedule of the Barangay and SK Election is already slated this coming October 28, 2013.
Based upon the latest data from the Commission, the total number of registrants for the elections has reached about 1.5 million, surp(–foul word(s) removed–)ing the poll body’s estimates of only about 700,000 potential voters. The COMELEC have also targeted a total of 2 million youths aged 15-17 who will register for the SK polls, a total of 1.2 million have already registered.
