Philippines’ Local Candidates Official Campaign Period Begins

The official campaign periods of various  local positions in the country begins yesterday, March 29, 2013 during Good Friday but according to COMELEC, candidates can only start their campaign, on Black Saturday.

Candidates were barred from campaigning during Good Friday in observance of the Holy Week. According to the records of the poll body, there are 44,523 local candidates running nationwide.

According to COMELEC Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. the local candidates were under close scrutiny by the Commission on Elections. Local candidates nationwide were vying for more than 18,000 positions including the Lower House, regions, provinces, cities and towns.

There are 891 local positions are up for grabs in Metro Manila while the voters from the ARMM will choose a total of 4,170 local officials for the May 2013 Local and National Elections.

Nationwide voters will select a total of 640 congressman, 3,909 mayors, 210 regional and provincial governors, 29,8922 municipal councilors as well provincial board members, vice-mayors, vice-governors, and city councilors.
