Eastern Samar Hits by a Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake

Eastern Samar was hit by a magnitude 5.5 earthquake on Thursday morning according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 138 kilometers northeast of Guiuan and occured at around 8:43 AM.

Here are the different intensities felt in the following areas:

  • Intensity V – Mercedes, Eastern Samar
  • Intensity IV – Tacloban City, Borongan City, General MacArthur, Eastern Samar;
  • Intensity III – Catbalogan City; Jaro; Dulag; Tolosa, Leyte
  • Intenisty II – Capoocan; Dagami, Leyte

Phivolcs confirmed that the earquake was tectonic in origin caused by the movement of a local fault. The Eastern Samar earthquake had a depth of 20 kms. As of press time there’s no reported damages or casualties in the reported earthquake.
