The last third spot which was given to Asia was captured by the Philippines as they finished third runner-up in the recently held HSBC Asian Sevens Series in Singapore on Saturday.
The Philippines was able to defeat South Korea with the final score at 22-19, in Singapore. They will be joining Asian power rugby teams from Japan and Hongkong in the 24-team competition next year.
The triumph of the Philippines is the very first time that a Philippine delegate will become part of the Rugby World’s most prestigious competition.
Although the Philippines was earlier defeated by the Japanese with the final score at 17-7 in the semis they have bounced back and defeated South Korea for the final slot in the Rugby World Cup Sevens.
