One of the prominent member of the Catholic Church in the Philippines was appointed as the newest member of the 120-man cardinals in the world. His excellency Cardinal Tagle was even named as the world’s second youngest cardinal.
The cardinal from the Philippines will be one of the adviser to the pope and one of his most important part in the Catholic Church is that he will be included in the list of people who will select Pope Benedict’s successor.
The Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle will be among the six non-European Roman Catholic prelates who will join the Vatican’s College of Cardinals this coming November, according to Pope Benedict XVI announcement on Wednesday.
Other cardinals will will be name this coming November were American James Michael Harvey, Lebanon’s Bechara Boutros Rahi, India’s Baselios Cleemis, Nigeria’s John Onaiyekan and Colombia’s Ruben Salazar Gomez.
Meanwhile according to the official announcement from Vatican, India’s Baselios Cleemis, who was 53-years-old will be the youngest cardinal in the world.
Arcbishop Luis Antonio Tagle will be the seventh cardinal from the Philippines. Right now the Philippines other cardinals are retired Archbishops Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales who was 80-years-old, and Ricardo Cardinal Vidal an 81-year-old Cardinal from Cebu. Since 1970, cardinals which are over 80-years-old were not counted as active.
With the inclusion of Archbishop Tagle, the Philippines will have an active cardinal in case of a conclave. At the age of 55, he will be the second youngest cardinal of the world.
