The United States Geological Service, USGS confirmed earlier that a magnitude 6.0 earthquake hits off the coast of Sarangani in Davao del Sur at around 12:42 PM on Wednesday, October 17, 2012.
The earthquake which was also confirmed by Phivolcs but downgraded the magnitude to 5.8 struck off Davao del Sur. The epicenter was located 181 kilometers southwest of Sarangani town.
As of press time there is no recorded damage to properties but local authorities have responded already for possible aftershocks that will surely hit the province.
Here are the following intensities felt by nearby towns according to Phivolcs:
- Intensity IV- Don Marcelino, Davao del Sur
- Intensity III- Malita, Davao del Sur
- Intensity I- General Santos City
The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 333 kms.
