The Team Philippines managed to score a win against powerhouse Team United States in the on-going Homeless World Cup in Mexico City. The Filipinos defeated the Americans with the final score at 6-4.
The game was held at the Plaza de la Constitución in Zócalo, Mexico City. This is the second time that the Philippines was able to score a win after they defeated earlier the HWC Team from Sweden with the final score at 12-2.
The victory of the Philippines put more confidence on the boys to pursue their dreams of breaking their previous highest rankings at 24th spot during last year’s Homeless World Cup.
The Filipinos lead as much as 3 point ahead of the US Team when they got a total of 4 goals against 1 goal midway through the match.
The Americans was able to trim the deficit to 5-4 in the next remaining minutes of the game. Eddie Alivio from Don Bosco Boy’s Home and Training Center in Cebu made a breakaway goal from the right flank in the dying seconds of the game to secure the Philippines victory with the final score at 6-4.
John Paul Cordero on the other hand led the Philippine Team with a total of 3 goals to carry the Philippines’ first win in the secondary stage of the competition.
The other two goals from the Philippines came from farmer Nichol John Jardin from Tayabas, Quezon and Jerwin Papiona from Leyte-Samar Center for Change Foundation.
The Philippines is currently in Group F which features Cambodia, Denmark, Finland, US and Peru. They will face Peru and Denmark on Wednesday.
