The Philippine National Basketball Team, Smart Gilas Pilipinas faced one of the strongest team from the Middle East, Team Jordan. The team that previously defeated the Philippines during the FIBA Asian Championship which was held in the Philippines.
The 34th edition of the Jones Cup featured some of the prominent teams from Asia, some of them sending their second national team. A team from the United States was also one of the participants.
The competition has a different format which enabled the team with the highest winning standing will win the crown. The Philippine team was considered as one of the title contender of the tournament.
