Mark Barriga Defeated in a Controversial Olympic Boxing Decision Against Kazakhstan

Mark Anthony Barriga was defeated by Birzhan Zhakipov from Kazakhstan with a controversial 16-17 scores in favor of his opponent. Mark Barriga was considered as one of the most explosive boxer in the 49 kgs. division especially after his impressive wins during the round of 32 where he defeated the Italian boxer, Manuel Kappai.

During the Round 1 of the boxing match in the Light Flyweight Division, the Kazakhstan boxer, Zhakipov lead by a mere 1 point lead with the score at 5-4.

In Round 2, the Filipino boxer, Mark Barriga returns with a vengeance and was able to score with a total of 6-3. At the end of Round 2, Barriga lead with a total of 10-8 before the start of the 3rd round.

The Round 3 is one of most controversial portion of the fight wherein the Filipino boxer, Barriga was deducted by 2 points given by the referee after he ducked his Kazakhstan opponent.

The match ended with the final score at 17-16 in favor of the Kazakhstan boxer. The defeat of Barriga ended the boxing hopes of the Philippine team to the London Olympics. Barriga was the lone boxing contingent from the Philippines.
