
As the Catholic world celebrates one of the most important day of the year, the Christmas Day a bomb exploded in a Catholic Church in the outskirts of the Nigerian capital Abuja. According to the witnesses the Catholic Church is packed when the explosion occurs.
Emergency services responding to the incident were complaining that they lacked the emergency service vehicles and personnel who could help the victims especially the dead and the wounded.
According to the spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) the blast happened at the street near the church but the church was severely affected. Windows and doors of nearby establishments were also shattered because of the impact of the explosion.
According to Reuters reports the blasts happened at the St Theresa’s Church in Madala, an Abuja satellite town about 40 km from the city center.
There is no immediate claim of whatever groups were responsible for the bombing but there were speculations that the group who were fighting against the government of Nigeria were to blame. Past bombing incidents were blamed to the islamist sect Boko Haram.
The latest death tolls reported from different news media organizations were at 25 people dead and rescue workers were still doing the search and rescue operations to determine the total number of casualties and those who were wounded.
