Researchers from John Hopkins Hospital have successfully developed a protocol that will increase the availability of kidneys for transplant. This protocol can desensitize individuals having problem acquiring a compatible kidney.
This procedure eliminates troublesome antibodies in patients who are scheduled to receive a kidney from an incompatible donor. Medical professionals say, finding a compatible kidney is a lot of process to undergo before acquiring the right one. But, according to Doctor Montgomery the protocol will allow patient to get transplanted with regular healthy kidneys.
Plasmapheresis uses immunoglobulin proteins to neutralize the effect of antibodies during and after the procedure.
“People usually think of antibodies as a good thing to one’s health, but it prevents individual who develops the said antibody particularly for women after pregnancy from getting in a transplant,” explained Dr. Robert Montgomery, because women were the most affected by this problem. Two-third from among the patients underwent in their study were women, Montgomery said.

Having a regular immunoglobulin therapy a patient will have a higher chance of survival after the operation since the troublesome antibodies are being neutralized. They are special proteins in the blood that fight infections. Some of our white blood cells make them. They are also known as antibodies. Antibodies are important for the immune system. In immunoglobulin therapy (IVIg), extra immunoglobulins from a donor are injected into your blood. Unlike in some other procedure a patient may suffer from heart attack and some other complication cause by a dialysis procedure.
