Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista was declared the winner by technical decision. He had suffered three cuts and in the 7th round the referee had to stopped the fight and read the score cards in which Bautista had scored a win against Heriberto “Cuate” Ruiz.
Rey Bautista had avenged his 2008 loss to Heriberto Ruiz to capture the International Boxing Federation (IBF) International Featherweight Title and a chance for a crack to the WBA Featherweight World Title against the reigning champion Yuorkis Gamboa.
The three judges scoring were all in favor of Bautista after the ring physician suggeste to the referee to stop the fight because of the cut suffered by Rey Bautista against Heriberto Ruiz. Judges scores were, Judge Bruce McTavish 69-65, Judge Muhamad Rois 68-65 and Judge Rey Danseco 68-65. All three judges favored Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista.
During the fight Bautista had landed clearer blows in the fifth and the sixth round, although during the early rounds it was considered as a fair round, with both fighters exchanged blows. Bautista had suffered a head butt just like his previous fight with Heriberto Ruiz.
The Boholano pride Bautista who stands at 5’6 was weighing at 125.5 pounds during the weigh-in while his opponent weights at 126 pounds and had a reach advantage compared to “Boom Boom”. The fight which was held at Waterfront Hotel and Casino was one of the anticipated match not only by the Cebuanos but the boxing community as well.
Analysts and audience was not so impressed with the way Bautista showed his boxing prowess, but according to the trainer of Bautista, a win is a win and the rules had been set. Bautista’s team are open also for a possible rematch with Ruiz.
