Dale Earnhardt Jr. was defeated by Kevin Harvick during the final lap of the Coca-Cola 600 when he was caught out of fuel on the final turn forcing him to slow down and settle for 7th place. The Coca-Cola 600 was the longest race in NASCAR held at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Most of the cars competing suffered the same problem that Earnhardt had encountered lack of fuel for the final four laps. Harvick had also spoiled the possible win for Earnhardt two years ago at Martinsville. During the race Harvick was not expecting to win for he got some problems with his car during the early stages of the race but his confidence had driven him to finish strong.
Harvick was just lucky for having enough fuel up to the final stretch of the race. He was just in sixth place, but moved on to five spot when leader Greg Beffle pitted for fuel. The leader Kasey Kahne had also run out of gas on the restart and fourth placer Brad Keselowski run into the back of him.
With the situation their were two remaining obstacles for Harvick to make it to the top, Demy Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt which was unfortunately runs out of fuel giving Harvick the win.
