A 5.1 magnitude earthquake took ten lives in southern Spanish town of Lorca, injuring dozens while several buildings have been destroyed on Wednesday.
Among those who were killed include a pregnant woman and a child who died because of the fallen masonry. On the other hand, at least 130 have been injured. There were some who pleaded for relief.
The deadly quake occurred at around 6:47 p.m. that centered almost 50 kilometers southwest of Murcia. Thousands of residents panicked as they were forced to stay outdoors the whole night. No one was able to sleep in their homes officials said.
Authorities say that the deadly quake was estimated to have duration between five to eight seconds.
Buildings have collapsed as streets have been blocked by fallen debris. A reporter closely missed a church clocktower broke on the ground.
Broadcasts show that residents gather in groups. Some wept while hoping that everything will be alright. According to Francisco Jodar, Lorca’s Mayor most of the residents spent overnight in streets and in other public places such as basketball courts and playgrounds.
Official says that Murcia is the most seismically active place in Spain.
Such tremor followed the deadliest Spain earthquake happened way back April 19, 1956 that killed 11 people in the town of Albolote, a southern Spanish province of Granada.
